Time for a Paddle Upgrade? Here’s What to Know About Delamination

Helpful Tips

Spot the signs early and save your game.

If you care about your gameplay, then you already understand how important it is to have a high-performance paddle. But even the best paddle has a shelf life. Like any piece of equipment, wear and tear is inevitable, and for paddles, that often shows up as delamination.

Whether you're a recreational player or a seasoned competitor, understanding what delamination is and how to catch it early can make all the difference in your performance (and your safety).

What Is Paddle Delamination and What Causes It?

Pickleball paddles are made up of multiple layered materials like graphite, carbon fiber, fiberglass, and wood. Over time, those layers can start to separate. That separation process is called delamination, and it’s often caused by a breakdown of the adhesive that binds the paddle’s core to its surface.

Depending on how often you play and the quality of your paddle, delamination can start to happen after just 6–12 months for heavy players, or closer to 1–3 years for casual use. Factors like weather exposure, moisture, and extreme temperatures can accelerate the process.

Signs to Look For

Delamination isn’t always obvious at first, but there are a few common signs to keep an eye out for:

  • Bubbling or peeling on the paddle’s surface
  • Uneven textures when you run your hand across the face
  • Soft spots that feel different than the rest of the paddle
  • Changes in sound when hitting the ball, a dull or flat tone can signal internal separation
  • Unexpected misfires are shots that don’t go where they used to, or feel off despite proper technique

These small signals can be the first warning that your paddle isn’t performing as it should.

How to Be Careful with Your Paddle

To extend the life of your paddle and avoid delamination:

  • Store it in cool, dry areas away from moisture
  • Avoid leaving it in extreme heat or cold (like a hot car or freezing garage)
  • Regularly check your paddle’s condition, especially if it’s seen a lot of court time
  • Rotate between paddles if possible, giving each one a break

Even if your paddle feels fine, delamination can begin quietly. Routine checks help you spot the signs before damage worsens.

Why It Matters

Playing with a delaminated paddle doesn’t just impact your performance, it can be dangerous. If the paddle starts to split during a match, it could cause injury from splinters or flying fragments. And unfortunately, delaminated paddles aren’t repairable. Once it starts, the safest option is to replace it.
